Anne Hanley is a Batik artist and painter living and working in Wheaton, Illinois.  Her paintings have been shown in galleries and several juried shows and exhibitions.  Anne has experience in developing personal commission work and community public art projects, and was hired by United Way and ECAF (Elmhurst Children’s Assitance Foundation).  Recently, Anne worked in a gallery and became an experienced consultant and adviser to clients on the subject of contemporary artists and the purchasing of artwork. Today, Anne is producing and selling

her paintings for several art fairs in the Chicago area.  Anne’s paintings are created from her personal vision, often abstracting a representational form then adding bold strokes of color and texture.  Her work is an elegant and artful blending of wax, paint and paper.

A graduate of Illinois State University she holds a Bachelors Degree in Art and Design.  She began her career as an Art Director in multi-image and video production for Educational Training and National Sales Conventions.  After a few years Anne decided to quite her job and stay home to raise her daughters, and return to painting.  She began takeing classes at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Textile Art Center, and the Evanston Art Center.  Over the next several years and today she would have the opportunity meet some great teachers and study privately with several professional Chicago area artists.  But when Anne took classes at the Textile Art Center in Chicago she was fascinated by the techniques of resist painting.

Anne’s current work utilizes the centuries old method of Batik in a unique way.  Instead of traditional materials of fabric and dye paints, Anne uses hot wax and watercolor paint on a ricepaper surface.  Always fascinated by images found in nature, Anne has successfully made this the basis for most of her work and designs.

“Art for me is both a discipline and a form of meditation.  I enjoy the process of making the art as well as developing the subject.  As an artist who grew up in a family of disciplined musicians, practicing my art is a necessary means to a more fulfilling life.  I enjoy a variety of subjects exaggerating the forms in expressive, bold, large shapes of color and texture.   As a mixed media artist I enjoy the freedom of experimenting with several different mediums and tools.  I never tire of the exploration.  I hope the viewer has as much fun looking at my work as I do making it”.
